Caterpillar Inc. manufactures construction and mining equipment, off-highway Diesel and Natural Gas engines, industrial Gas turbines and Diesel-electric locomotives. Its primary business segments include Power & Energy, Construction Industries and Resource Industries, supported by a global dealer network and financing services through Cat Financial.
Caterpillar exited the Favoured zone on July 16, 2026, at $877.17 with a negative SMAX reading. At its recent closing price of $826.64, the shares have declined approximately 5.8% since that move. CAT now sits in 59th position out of 103 in the SIA S&P 100 Index Report, placing it in the Unfavoured zone after falling 54 spots over the past quarter. Its current SIA SMAX score is 5/10.
The deterioration in Caterpillar’s relative strength ranking coincides with weakness in its broader sector. Manufacturing ranks 20th out of 31 sectors in the SIA Sector Report, down 15 positions over the past quarter and sitting in the Unfavoured zone. This places both the stock and its sector in the weaker portions of their respective reports.
Although CAT has gained 3.30% over the past month, exceeding the 0.45% return of the iShares S&P 100 ETF (OEF), the quarterly comparison remains considerably weaker. Caterpillar declined 19.84% over the quarter while OEF advanced 5.55%. The recent monthly rebound has therefore occurred within a broader period of underperformance.
On the point-and-figure chart, Caterpillar recently broke below prior support at $842.40, with its latest signal registering a Bearish Triple Bottom. The next support level is $778.25, followed by further support at $664.23. Initial resistance may correlate with the 3-box reversal level of $859.25, with additional resistance at $948.68.
The support break, decline in relative ranking, and sector weakness remain the key considerations for advisors despite the recent monthly gain. A move through initial resistance would be an early sign of price improvement, while a recovery in relative strength would help assess whether CAT’s position against its peers is also improving.
