This Weekâs Post: Stable, but Uninspiring
Earnings season officially kicked off this week. The early read appears to be that economic growth is stable but uninspiring. Expectations are low, but growth will be hard to achieve because comps will be difficult for the next couple of quarters. Although optimism has rebounded with markets, CEOs are still cautious and March was a weak month for industrial markets. Capital markets have opened back up for strong issues, but confidence is fragile.
The Macro Outlook:
Economic growth is stable, but uninspiring

Taiwan Semiconductor sees global semiconductor growth of just 1% this year

CSX sees volume declines continuing in the second quarter

Alcoa reduced its demand growth forecast for aluminum
âWeâre revising our 2016 global demand for aluminum from 6% to 5% with consumption on pace to reach 59.7 million metric tons. The slight decline in demand is from two key markets, China and North America. Chinese growth is being reduced to 6.5% versus our prior forecast of 8% due to slower growth in the construction and electrical segments. Comps will remain difficult for many companies until the fourth quarter

March was soft

Semiconductor buyers are cautiously rebuilding inventory

Loan growth has been surprisingly strong

Markets are stable enough that companies should be able to raise capital

But even though confidence has improved, markets are still fragile

International:
The global business environment continues to be challenging

In Europe, markets continue to decline with stable volumes but falling prices; while in North America growth in our categories has eased back to only around 1%. Even though the dollar has weakened it still may be several quarters until you would see an impact on global trade flows

Financials:
The San Francisco real estate market will have to absorb a lot of new supply

JP Morgan and PNC still expect two rate hikes this year

In order to hit it big you have to take big swings

Corporate cultures are not created, they are evolved
