The TSX Financial Services Index led strength in the TSX
Composite Index yesterday. Scotia Bank and TD Bank broke to
all-time highs.
Equity Markets in the Month of
May
May has a history of mixed performance for U.S. equity
markets and higher than average performance for Canadian
equity markets. May is the fifth best performing month of
the year for the NASDAQ Composite Index during the past 40
years and eighth best for the S&P 500 Index and Dow Jones
Industrial Average during the past 62 years. It also is the
second best performing month for the TSX Composite Index
during the past 27 periods. During the past 10 periods,
average returns per period were -0.7% for the Dow, -0.3% for
the S&P 500, +0.3% for the NASDAQ Composite and +1.3% for
the TSX Composite Index.
Best performing sectors in May since 1990 were Consumer
Staples and Health Care. Worst performing sectors were
Utilities and Telecom.
Best performing sub-sectors are Banks, Agriculture and
Biotech. Worst performing sub-sectors were Homebuilders,
Silver and Semiconductors.
Best performing days in the month for the S&P 500 Index
were the first three trading days and the last two trading
days. On average, remaining days recorded negative returns.
On average during the past 62 years, U.S. and Canadian equity
markets reach a seasonal peak on May 5th.
