Mary Hagerman: "Women need to kick butt to get ahead in business"

Mary Hagerman, Portfolio Manager and Investment Advisor, Desjardins Securities, and author of The Black Belt Investor is passionate that more women need to get into the investment business.

We spoke to Mary Hagerman at the inaugural Inside ETFs Conference in Montreal.

"I was inspired [to write *The Black Belt Investor"] by my 30 years of practice as a financial advisor, listening to multiple client stories, and I was touched by the fact that there's so much focus today on fitness, on feeling good, and ultimately feeling happy," says Hagerman. "The premise for my book is "How can you feel truly happy if you don't have a healthy relationship with money?"

Hagerman has also played an instrumental role in promoting the first breakfast that Women in ETFs has had for women in ETFs in Montreal.

"I think it's really important, having been in the business for 30 years, and not having had a female mentor, that women like myself, who do have experience, step up to the plate, and help the younger who are in our industry to really go, and be motivated, have the courage to go get the job done. And, there are a lot of jobs," says Hagerman.

"I'm a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Karate, and it's become my mantra, "You gotta kick butt, you gotta kick butt." and it's my message, for not only how to have a healthy relationship with money, but also for women," explains Hagerman. "You gotta kick butt, you gotta be out there, you gotta ask, and you will receive."

Mary Hagerman shares her advice for women who are either already in the investment business, or contemplating getting into the business.
