What does automated underwriting actually do to the independent life advisor's business? The research answers neither triumphantly nor alarmingly. Automation is "likely to strengthen the productive independent advisor's role in simple cases while raising the bar for speed, data quality, and advice value." It "removes much of the administrative friction around standard risks; it does not eliminate the need for an advisor in complex protection, business-owner, estate, and impaired-risk planning." That distinction, between transaction work and judgment work, runs through everything that follows. A note on sourcing: carrier capabilities described below reflect each carrier's own published disclosures and announcements as of August 2026, and program limits are subject to change.
What Changes First?
The immediate effects are practical. Straight-through decisions shrink the window "in which clients lose interest, fail to complete requirements, or shop elsewhere." And this is no longer a two-carrier story. As of August 2026, the Canadian market has quietly assembled a full roster of automated capability, each described in the carriers' own terms. Manulife's MAUDE, the Manulife Automated Underwriting Decision Engine, delivers automatic decisions for eligible digital applications, reportedly in as little as two minutes, covering term up to $2 million and certain permanent products to $500,000, generally for ages 60 and under, according to the carrier's disclosures as reported by CDO Magazine. iA Financial Group runs real-time decisions on the FICO Platform and, per its technology partner FICO, has stated an objective of progressing toward 80 percent underwriting automation. Sun Life describes Sun eApp as providing instant approval for some eligible cases and straight-through underwriting in which standard risks are approved without an underwriter's intervention, with a model the carrier says considers more than 200 variables. RBC Insurance describes AI-supported term life underwriting up to $3 million for applicants under 50, and ivari's published guidance states its eApp can produce an instant approval and instant policy issue when a completed non-medical case meets requirements.
BMO Insurance now sets the ceiling. SmartDecision, launched in July 2026, delivers real-time decisions up to what BMO describes as an industry-leading $5 million across Term Life, Universal Life and Whole Life, aligned with the carrier's full accelerated underwriting limits, with no traditional tele-interviews or medical evidence for eligible applicants. It sits inside the SmartApp suite, powered by VUE, the Virtual Underwriting Engine. "We're redefining what clients should expect from the life insurance experience," says Rohit Thomas, BMO Insurance's President and CEO (BMO Newsroom). Notably, the carrier says its comfort at that level rests on favourable actual-to-expected mortality ratios and mortality slippage analysis, comparing accelerated decisions against what full underwriting would have concluded. The confidence is actuarial, not promotional.
There is a catch: the front-end interview becomes more important, not less. As the research puts it, "a missed prescription, inaccurate build, poorly explained medical history, or inadequate consent can turn an otherwise fast file into a delay, referral, or decline." Garbage in, delay out.
Not All Automation Is Created Equal
Here the research draws its most useful distinction, and it is one advisors should internalize. There are three levels. First, "true straight-through/instant decisioning": BMO, Manulife, Sun Life, RBC, ivari, and certain Empire Life cases. Second, accelerated underwriting, the Canada Life and Equitable Life model, where "predictive analytics can eliminate or reduce labs, fluids, parameds, or other evidence, but a file may still go to an underwriter." Canada Life's published non-fluid limits have reached $5 million for ages 18 to 45; Equitable's published non-medical evidence limits run to $3 million for ages 18 to 50. Third, workflow and field-underwriting support, tools that improve pre-screening "but are not necessarily adjudication engines."
The lesson: "no medical" marketing conceals real differences in what the algorithm actually decides. Manulife's MAUDE, for instance, as reported by Insurance Business Canada, "is designed to approve some low-risk cases automatically but is not authorized to issue rated offers or declines." Citing McKinsey, the research adds that clients outside eligibility rules may obtain better rates through the fully underwritten route: "'no medical' should not be treated as synonymous with 'best outcome'" (McKinsey).
The Advisor as Underwriting Navigator
The research's central reframe is that the strongest independents become "underwriting navigators": pre-screening candidly, matching clients to the right pathway, and escalating exceptions early with "a coherent cover letter and context where a model or rules engine may not capture the complete risk story." BMO's chief corporate underwriter Katarina Nikolic gestures at the same shift, saying the goal is to "embed it right into the client journey," since underwriting has rarely been transparent to individual life advisors. Drawing on RGA, AI stumbles "where evidence conflicts, information is incomplete, or a client's circumstances do not fit a standard risk category." Precisely there, human judgment retains its value (RGA).
The Culmination: Competing on True Instant Decisioning
The endgame is now visible. As true instant decisioning spreads, the competitive question is no longer "who has AI." Within true instant decisioning, BMO's SmartDecision offers what the carrier describes as an industry-leading $5 million across Term, Universal Life, and Whole Life. Canada Life's published limits match the face amount, but through accelerated underwriting, where a file may still land on an underwriter's desk. The distinction is the point. The research frames the real comparison precisely: "instant-issue rate, maximum face amount, age band, product eligibility, standard-only versus rated outcomes, and which evidence sources the algorithm can waive." An advisor who can navigate that matrix, and who knows that a 52-year-old business owner belongs in one lane and a healthy 34-year-old term buyer in another, is not being displaced by automation. That advisor is being armed by it. Automation "compresses the economics of low-complexity transaction work" while expanding capacity. When the facts change, the practice model changes too.
Five Key Takeaways
1. True instant decisioning is now widespread in Canada: BMO (a carrier-described industry-leading $5M across Term, UL, and Whole Life), Manulife, Sun Life, RBC, ivari, and Empire Life all offer it in some form, per their published disclosures.
2. Distinguish instant decisioning from accelerated underwriting from workflow support; the labels are not interchangeable.
3. "No medical" is not automatically "best outcome"; some clients do better fully underwritten.
4. Data quality at the interview stage determines whether a file flies or stalls.
5. Compare carriers on instant-issue rate, face amount, age band, and what the algorithm can actually decide, verified against current carrier documents, not marketing claims alone.
At-a-Glance Reference for Advisors (as of August 2026, per carrier disclosures)
| Consideration | What It Means in Practice |
|---|---|
| True instant decisioning | BMO SmartDecision (carrier-described industry-leading $5M, Term/UL/WL), Manulife MAUDE ($2M term, ~2 min), Sun Life Sun eApp, RBC ($3M term, under 50), ivari eApp, certain Empire Life cases |
| Accelerated (non-fluid) underwriting | Canada Life ($5M, ages 18–45), Equitable Life ($3M, ages 18–50); evidence reduced, underwriter may still adjudicate |
| Decision authority | Know what the engine can decide; MAUDE approves low-risk cases but cannot issue rated offers or declines |
| Carrier pathway fit | Match age, face amount, health profile, and product to each program's current published rules |
| Data quality | Rigorous fact finding up front; errors trigger delays, referrals, declines |
| Consent and privacy | Explain purpose, scope, and limits of digital data checks |
| Client expectations | Set conditional timelines, not guarantees; "instant" is an outcome, not a promise |
| Escalation | Flag exceptions early with cover letter and full risk context |
| Practice metrics | Track time to decision, referral rate, placement ratio, drop-off |
