Observations

Consensus earnings estimates from www.Factset.com for S&P 500 companies on a year-over-year basis in the second quarter of 2022 were virtually unchanged last week despite Wall Street talk of an economic slowdown in the U.S. in the second quarter. According to www.FactSet.com second quarter earnings on a year-over-year basis increased 4.3% and revenues increased 10.2% (up from 10.1% last week).

Consensus earnings and revenue estimates for S&P 500 companies beyond the second quarter on a year-over-year basis slipped slightly last week. According to www.FactSet.com earnings in the third quarter are expected to increase 10.6% (versus 10.7% last week) and revenues are expected to increase 9.8% (versus 9.7% last week). Earnings in the fourth quarter are expected to increase 10.0% (versus 10.1% last week) and revenues are expected to increase 7.5%. Earnings on a year-over-year basis for all of 2022 are expected to increase 10.4% (versus 10.5% last week) and revenues are expected to increase 10.7%.

Economic News This Week

Focus this week is on the May PCE Price Index released on Thursday

May Durable Goods Orders released at 8:30 AM EDT on Monday are expected to increase 0.1% versus a gain of 0.5% in April. Excluding transportation orders, May Durable Goods Orders are expected to increase 0.4% versus a gain of 0.4% in April.

Next estimate of U.S. first quarter real GDP released at 8:30 AM EDT on Wednesday is expected to decrease 1.5% versus the previous estimate a drop of 1.5%.

Federal Reserve Chairman is scheduled to speak at 9:30 AM EDT on Wednesday.

May PCE Price Index released at 8:30 AM EDT on Thursday is expected to increase 6.6% versus a gain of 6.3% in April. Excluding food and energy May PCE Price Index is expected to increase 4.9% versus a gain of 4.9% in April.

Canadian April GDP released at 8:30 AM EDT on Thursday is expected to increase 0.2% versus a gain of 0.7% in March.

Canadian equity markets are closed on Friday for the Canada Day holiday.

May Construction Spending released at 10:00 AM EDT on Friday is expected to increase 0.4% versus a gain of 0.2% in April.

June ISM Manufacturing PMI released at 10:00 AM EDT on Friday is expected to slip to 55.0 from 56.1 in May.
