Pew Research Center produces original data on a wide range of topics. We also share a lot of our findings on social media. Here, in no particular order, is a list of some of our most popular content on social media, informed by our analytics, from reports released in 2013.
1. Fathers have increased their housework and child care time, but still only do about half of what mothers do.
2. 65% of Americans say news organizations focus on unimportant stories rather than on important ones (28%).
3. More express concern over civil liberties (47%) than protection from terrorism (35%) for the first time in Pew Research Center polling.
4. 3% of Americans still connect to the internet at home via a dial-up connection.
5. During the first two years of the nation’s economic recovery, the mean net worth of households in the upper 7% of the wealth distribution rose by an estimated 28%, while the mean net worth of households in the lower 93% dropped by 4%.
6. For the first time in more than four decades of polling on the issue, a majority (52%) of Americans favor legalizing the use of marijuana.
7. A record 40% of all households with children under the age of 18 include mothers who are either the sole or primary source of income for the family.
8. 15% of American adults do not use the internet or email.
9. 56% of U.S. adults say they would not want to undergo medical treatments to slow the aging process and live to be 120 or more, but roughly two-thirds (68%) think that most other people would.
10. A record 37.6 million persons ages 5 years and older speak Spanish at home.
11. 56% of internet users have “Googled themselves,” or used a search engine to look up their own name to see what information is available about them online.
12. In 23 of 39 nations surveyed, a majority or plurality of the people say China either already has replaced or eventually will replace the U.S. as the top superpower.
13. One-in-ten (7.7 million) children were living with a grandparent in 2011. Approximately 3 million of these children were being cared for primarily by that grandparent.
14. In 2012, 36% of the nation’s young adults ages 18 to 31—the so-called Millennial generation—were living in their parents’ home.
15. A record 8% of households with minor children in the United States are headed by a single father, up from just over 1% in 1960.
16. 56% of LGBT adults say they have told their mother that they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender; 39% say they have told their father.
17. An estimated 11.7 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the U.S. in March 2012.
18. Nearly three-quarters of Americans – 72% – say that legal recognition of same-sex marriage is “inevitable,” including 85% of those who favor same-sex marriage and 59% of those who oppose it.
19. About half of Americans say the growing number of “people who are not religious” is bad for American society.
20. Nearly one-third—31%—of people say they have deserted a particular news outlet because it no longer provides the news and information they had grown accustomed to.
